It has had a great impact on how we communicate with the people in our personal, professional and overall social lives.  In fact, some of the things that we share may appear more favorably to some people in our social networks, but not so favorably to others. One Facebook post or tweet can bring humor to some and anger to others, which is based primarily on the type of relationship that you may have with members of your social networking sites.  Particularly those with whom a romantic relationship is shared – a wrong post or tweet can bring about jealousy, rage, humiliation, embarrassment, joy, surprises and more. Below are 10 ways that social media platforms have a direct impact on dating and relationships.

  • Excessive use of social media sites may show signs of compulsive behavior and being prone to certain addictions.
  • During the early stages of a relationship, everyone needs adequate space.  Using social media platforms to check on the other, is not very welcoming and can create resentment if revealed.  This becomes most obvious when questions are asked about various posts and photos that appear on the other party’s platforms.  Such acts can cause one to feel crowded and begin to question the motive behind this behavior too early in a relationship.
  • Using all forms of social media to communicate with your partner can be overwhelming and show signs of dependency and may also cause your mate to feel crowded.
  • Many couples prefer to come into a relationship with a clean slate, thus using social media platforms to find your mates past girlfriend or boyfriend can bring unwanted information into your new relationship and create more unnecessary problems.
  • Using social media platforms to address conflicts publicly can backfire and create public humiliation.
  • Sharing too much information about certain details of your relationship may be ok with you, but may not be with your partner, who may feel very private about certain things and rather keep them private.  It’s good to know what those things are in advance as it may result in trust issues.
  • Finding out something about your mate online before he or she share’s it with you may have a negative impact on the relationship as well.
  • Being exposed to what your partner “likes” online may be both surprising and shocking. Sometimes “likes” are made on non-social media platforms, (such as online stores after a purchase is made) yet this information appears as a part of your mate’s social media data that can be stored on one site.   To inquire about even some of the more questionable “likes” may create resentment however.
  • It’s always best to be where you tell your mate you’re going to be; especially since people around you can easily make posts or take photos of you while you’re out at a function or event.
  • Sharing photos of the two of you is a great indication that you are in a solid relationship and that you both are very open about it with nothing to hide.  Those with reservations about this areas should be questioned.

Relationships are already difficult without using social media to further complicate it.  It’s also just another way to check up on your mate.  It should be used responsibly as one simple tweet or post could ruin a relationship that took years to build.
